Just wanna tell you guys that I am now arowana-less. My super red died months ago. No more arowana for the time being. At least I am stable enough. My photography hobby & my work require me to travel a lot making it hard to maintain a pet like arowana.

RTG means Red Tail Golden Arowana. Recently her colour development is no more impressive. It was copperish & 'dirty' look. I am not worried but concern over this kind of development. I still keep my hope high for this juvenile RTG. Hoping it will develop into a high back.

People are asking me this question.

A simple answer; because I don't like taking risk. If I buy a Malaysian Gold, I have to spend at least RM2500 and I am not sure I am buying a good one unless of course I know its both parents. Having said that, with some molecular medicine knowledge that I have, I know that, this is also not certain. There is what we call gene-environment interaction that may cause the MG not to cross. However if I buy a RTG, its OK if it does not cross, because it is a RTG. If it crosses.....it will be a great bonus :D

Apart from that, after looking so many pictures, RTG has a great bodyshape. Nevertheless it is indeed true that to get the good breed or the pure breed is almost impossible now. Same goes to MG.

The Polypteridae are ancient, snake-like fish whose origins date back to the time of the dinosaurs! All of the present-day Polypterids come from the freshwater rivers and lakes of Africa. They are able to breathe air via a lung-like modification to their swim bladder, and can travel over land using their strong pectoral fins. The are two genera: the genus Erpetoichthys contains only one species - E. calabaricus, known as the Rope or Reed Fish. The other genus contains the Polypterus species (bichirs).

The Bichir is generally peaceful and usually won't bother tankmates of the same size. This odd fish needs lots of hiding places, and a shallow tank with only a foot of water is plenty for the Bichir to be happy. A fine substrate of sand is recommended.

Bichirs are carnivorous and should be fed accordingly. Many specimens will accept nothing less than live foods such as earthworms or fish. Prepared foods such as chopped beef heart and fresh beef may also be accepted.

These fish require no special treatment other than the basical neutral pH value and water temperature between 75-82 degrees F.

1. Thick scale - The scales are rather thick and come with matt dark red colour when matured. The aro look less shiny when young but known as a fast developer. Smaller body size and matured faster (3 - 4 yrs). It can come with either thin or thick frame. Blood Reds are under this group.

2. Thin scale - the scales are thin with shining bright red colour when matured. Very good shine at young and able to grow really big if the necessary parameters are well taken care including the space. Known as a very slow developer but faster interm of crossing. Take longer time to matured (5 - 6 yrs). It also can come with thin or thick frame. Chilli Reds fall under this category.

It was the merdeka eve when my RTG jumped into the traingle filter glass space. I am still grieving. And there went my RM2000 fish.

I am looking for a replacement now. Not sure whether I want to buy another RTG or a Malaysian Gold. I asked bro Kamisan regarding some pointers for my search & here is his answer:

My understanding on the Crossback (XB) and Malaysian Golden (MG) term is MG is XB but XB not necessary mean MG.
An XB can also be a mix of MG & SR, MG & TY and the worst thing is when they describe the off spring of SR x RTG as XB.

To choose an MG;
1. Not spoony. Should be pointed head when young.
2. The pectoral fins are short.
3. The 3rd level scales are half-moon and not semi-hexagon.
4. The dorsal fin is round and not with sharp end.
5. Gold developement at the gill plates should be spread equally and intensify slowly and not spreading from the "A" line crack.
6. Orange colour eyes and not with dark patches.
7. Avoid aros with copperish gold on it's 5th level scales below the dorsal.
8. The 1/3 and 2/3 at the tail fin should be harmonious and not straight separation from the base to the end. Clear separation belongs to RTG.
9. .... and some others."

Here is my sump layout:

First chamber :
3/4 filled with bio-balls and covered with a single piece of Jap-mat. The top is covered with a single sheet of normal sponge.
(This way is very economical as RM5 sponge can be used 4 times or for 4 months)

Second chamber:
Bio-grame - 3kg, Normal Ceramic ring - 4kg, Sintered Ceramic Ring 2kg, Volcanic stone 2kg and 1/2kg coral chips.
(air-stone placed at the bottom, center and top)

Third chamber:
1 layer of bio-balls at the bottom coverd with 5 layers of bio-mat (black nylon like sponge). (air-stone placed at the center and top)

Fourth chamber:
1kg of ziolite and the pump.

Water is crystal clear always. Only change the normal sponge once a month. 20% water change 2 weeks once. Have not touched or cleaned the filter chambers in last eight months.

pH - 6.8 to 7.0 Ammonia/Nitrate 0

Have a 14 month old SR, 2 red kelah, 3 lampam, 2 birche and 1 Silver dollar

The air-stones main purpose is provide better aeration for the BB. You will sure to notice the difference in water quality by using air-stone. I adopted to this method from my Koi experience.

Sintered glass CR supposedly have highest density of pourous where it can house a huge amount of BB. But it is 5 times more expensive than the normal CR.

Ziolite are meant to be temporary, but as i often feed my aro with feeder fish and live prawns which I normally dip in anti-bacterial solution, I leave the ziolite permanent as it helps in removing the small amount of toxic.

Bio-gramme is similar to Eheim's subtrate. Used for BB cultivation. Eheim very expensive......loose biogramme 1kg = RM10...
i used place it at the bottom of the second chamber as it is more fine in nature compare to CR's. Due to this nature, the flow way from second to third chamber is covered quite tightly thus ensuring the decomposed waste are better trapped.

How to organize your SUMP tank

There's no right or wrong combination about sump organisation except a few guidelines:
1. The first chamber is recommended for the coarse media such as Japanese mat, or coarse Filter sponge so that it does not clogged.
2. The second chamber could be ceramic rings, lava rocks etc etc with Jap mat or coarse Filter sponges again to make sure there's no clogging.
3. The third chamber could be of finer materials such as filter wool combination with filter sponges. Here is where the main maintenance are done where dirt and sediments are trapped in filter wool and replacement wool can be effected easily.
4. The fourth chamber is empty with the powerhead. Adding ketapang is OK as long as it does not clogged the flow of water.
5. Of course some have a prefilter before the first chamber if you have a dry and wet setup. So prefiltering could be bioballs etc etc. Some bro uses a netting in the water inlet to filter out dirt and sediments which is also a good practice.

Red Tail Gold vs. High Back Red Tail Gold

The Red Tail Golden, a native of Indonesia, Riau and Pekan Baru are golden arowanas with gold scales up to the 4th level. I would normally term this as half gold versus the full golden malaysian crossback that is completly covered with gold scales - 6th level.

HBRTG as known as High Back Red Tail Golden are hybrids where the RTG crossbreed with a Malaysian Crossback thus with the transfer and mixed of genes would presumely give you an offspring with higher shine of gold up to the 5th scale.

Those 1st and 2nd generation of HBRTG could potentially have a complete 5th level golden scle when placed in a tank at eye level could pass off as a Crossback.

If you are very lucky where the xback genetics is stronger and the offspring has a complete 6th level. I would not term this as a CROSSBACK instead of a HBRTG. so in short, a High Back RTG should have at least developement up to the 5th.

No one will be able to guarantee this unless they know the brooder stock or its of the earlier generation.

I is hard to imagine, having a RTG crossbred with a Crossback verus a Crossback to Crossback. The time might be the same would lower cost and technics plays a part? At times, it is pure luck.

However, over time, the generations of spawn are of 3rd to 5th generation HBRTGs, they may end up back to the RTG realm.

In choosing HBRTGs, most will go for those with 5th level shine however even when choosing RTGs we would all attack the one with the higher shine too. We would tend to pay more for a HBRTG verus a normal RTG.

Still, a HBRTG is still an RTG, if it ever crosses then the farm will be very generous in offering Crossbacks at Red Tail Gold prices.

For an extra 10-20% increase, wouldn't you try you luck too?

In the market if you notice, there are batches of High Quality Red Tail Golds with a price tag of 2 to 3 times more of an RTG. These are the earlier generations offering more xback genes in terms of higher shine, nicer gold, more define scale, stronger bluish core and a higher chances of a completed 5th and some dust on sixth.

Zoe: It's a cross breed between Red arowana and Golden Crossback (XB). It's also called "Red Splendour" a trademark name used by Wan Hu. Price on tank is RM9,800 before discount. Check out at Pet Family Taman Megah, PJ. Also available at Irene PJ. House of Arowana has their version called "Rainbow". So have your credit card ready when you go to any of these places.

SgMartin: Tongyan (TY) is a name used by Qian Hu Farm, Rainbow Aquarium Pte Ltd Farm uses Rainbow Red.

SgMartin: Seriously speaking, no one is able to judge a Tongyan when it is onli 8".. the flushing doesn't come out.. all you know you maybe having a crossback or red instead. I would choose my TY's based on 1st preference to have the finage of a XB, worst come to worst it is an XB. Yes, as the world globalises, more money is made and spent, owning the King of Fishes is now open to all. Who doesn't want to strike 4D and be lucky all the way. I believe there are some LFS who manages and is managed by a breed of Boutique hobbyist. At least, they churn out quality and in time to come breed quality fishes then quantity fishes. I have prized XL Reds as well as Indo Reds. A com of XL and King Kong Aquaculture Farm Crossbacks too. I'll keep the better and release the rest. Still, an adult XR (new term XB Red ) with all the flushes comes at a high price (you have to pay for the risk, diet and TLC lah).. however if you spot a juvenile piece, grab it!! Just like what i did.. if it does not turn out then you decide.

SgMartin: Gold Aros tends to be more aggressive then Reds. In a breeding cycle, injuries are very common. However if you mix both both batches together, you will get higher chance of a crossbreed. However, the aros choose who they want to mixed with. In the 1st generation fries (say 50pcs XR1) of a successful XB x Super Red, the quality of the fishes would definately be much better. However the development may not be all the same. Some of the XR1 falls either back to the genetics of the Golden or Red while a few pieces display that of both. But in general, the XR1s of Tongyans and Rainbows. In the next spawn, The parental XR0 may not want to pair up, so that's the end of XR1s. Eventually the XR1s turns adults and goings into breeding. This time the XR2s are also Technically Tongyans and Rainbows! So the marketing goes on.. XR3 .. XR4...So which farm has the best TY and Rainbows.. Every farm has their best fries, just that do you have access to them. Local fish shopes (LFS) over time and their large purchases with farms will have lobangs (of 1st rights in selection). The better the relationship and of course the more experienced you are, the higher chances to get the better stocks. In short, All farms has good aros. If you have the time to scout around go forth, else blanja your kakis coffee and ask for their experience to help choose. Support the Pro-Arowana LFSes, you'll get go deals too!

How to solve high Nitrite (by Kamisan of ArowanaClub)

My opinion on your situation is that your filteration system isn't matured / not fully established yet. Since the system is new, it can't be the bad bacteria vs beneficial bacteria kind of problem.

What we can do is put some Active-carbon and Zeolite (for roughly 2 weeks) at the LAST COMPARTMENT of the sump tank where we normally place the pump. These Active-carbon and Zeolite will only act on the remaining Ammonia & Nitrite that not been cleared by the BBs, thus the Nitrogen cycle will not be interupted.

The presence of Nitrite (NO2) is a good sign of Nitrogen cycle progress but the capacity and strength of the BB colonies still cannot take the bio-load.

Get those simple test kit for water parameters;
a. PH
b. Ammonia
c. Nitrite

Below are some guide of cycling stage;
a. 1st. Stage - High Ammonia and zero Nitrite.
b. 2nd. Stage - Some Ammonia and some Nitrite.
c. 3rd. Stage - Zero Ammonia and High Nitrite.
d. 4th. stage (Fully cycled) - Zero Ammonia and zero Nitrite.

During the 1st, 2nd and 3rd stage, partial water change and/or usage of absorbent filter mediums (Active-carbon / Zeolite - with proper manner) is really recommended. However the usage of the Active-carbon is only a temporary measure. Remove it as soon as the excessive Ammonia and/or Nitrite had been cleared. Active-carbon is an effective absorbent medium, other than clearing all the toxic elements in the water, it will also absorb all the essential nutrients (Vitamins and trace elements) from the water. Prolong usage will lead to nutrients deficiency to our fish. Zeolite is also known as Ammonia rock and white in colour. Normally sold side by side with the Active-carbon. Wash thoroughly (with tap water) to remove the white powder before putting it to the system.

Monitor the parameters closely at this early stage. Anything can happen to the parameters especially to non-fully cycled system.

Feed your aro gradually in order to avoid;
a. Bio-load surge.
b. Digestion problem of your aro. Slight glitch of the water parameters could affect young aro's digestion and internal system.

Here's a simple explanation to guide you along. hope it helps

There are old 3 category of Asian Arowanas that are endangered, namely the Green, Red and Gold. For the Gold, there's a high quality gold (Crossback) and low quality gold (Red Tail Gold). For the Reds, there's a high quality red (Super Reds) and low quality reds (1.5 Reds, Grade 2 Reds or Banjars)

Over the years, some farm practice cross breeding to offer more variety in the market. The market over the years, started to name and brand their arowanas to show a distinctly unqiue feature which after several generations or breeding dwindled the actual genes/quality.

Crossback -Pahang Gold, Bukit Merah Blue, Sapphire Gold, malaysia gloden etc
Super Reds - Blood Reds, Chili Reds, Grade 1 Reds etc
Low quality Reds - Banjar Reds, 1.5, Red Arowana(2), Grade 2 reds, yellowtail, hongbao etc

Crossbreeding of the Crossback and RTG, chures an aro supposingly to have a higher shine and better coloration.
Termed as HighBack RTG. However, there is no guarantee but higher chance. Some hobbyist do not prefer and are not in favour of crossbreeding for many other reasons.

Panda is a farm, so its fishes are usually called Panda Reds, Panda Crossback. Locally bred Panda Golds are deemed to be high back RTG but over the period, they also have imported indonesia RTGs.

Xian Leng had a batch of aros named Banjar Gold where it is a crossbred of Banjar (1.5) and a RTG.
